Londongrad shopping is back

2 May 2017

Londongrad (and sometimes alternatively known as Moscow-on-shoppersThames) is back. In the recent past wealthy Russian visitors came to the capital city in droves to spend their money in the luxury shops but, for one reason or another, they were eclipsed by other nationalities, particularly the Chinese and Middle Easterners.

But now the Russians have, according to some recent figures, returned. The “Luxury Quarter” (which, we are sure many readers will know, comprises Mayfair, St James’s and Piccadilly) has witnessed a large increase of 55% in spending by Russians in the last year.

How do we know that? we hear you ask. Well, it has been calculated on the basis of tax refunds. It must surely be that the substantial fall in the value of the pound sterling last year has been helpful, and this is yet another sign that the predicted “Brexit disaster” is still some way off.
