The blue British passport may return

5 April 2017

Many years ago, not longblue passport after the dawn of time, British passport holders had a navy blue passport; the modern burgundy one is – as wine buffs will intuit – a European format.

Many people of course regret Brexit and fear its possible effects on the economy, unemployment, social cohesion and various other aspects but, for traditionalists, there is at least one advantage: the blue passport may return.

Conservative MEP Daniel Hannan, a Brexit supporter, said: “Bringing back the blue passport would symbolise that we are once again British subjects and not EU citizens.”

Mr Hannan is evidently an extreme traditionalist: the term “British subject” was – for most purposes – abolished in 1949; the relevant term these days is “British citizen”. But it seems that he does nonetheless represent a strong strand of opinion in certain circles.
