The “hostile environment” is dead, long live the “compliant environment”

17 July 2017

The Home Office Annual Report and Accounts 2016-2017 has just been hostilepublished. It’s quite long and contains a large amount of information, some of it about immigration (about which more later).

But one arresting thing emerged. The term “hostile environment” has been dropped, to be replaced with “compliant environment”. The term “hostile environment” was used to describe everything the Home Office did to make migrants with no immigration status unhappy (and, on occasion, migrants with legal status). Like stopping them getting driving licences, opening bank accounts, renting flats etc.

“Compliant environment” sounds so much nicer and, as added bonus, is easily and hilariously mistyped as “complaint environment”.
