Who will harvest the crops?

19 June 2017

It sounds like one of those philosophical questions, but this time it isn’t.fruit

The British don’t like working on farms and picking and packing the fruit and vegetables when harvest time comes in late summer and autumn. Traditionally it was left to the East European migrants, and particularly the Poles, Bulgarians and Romanians. So farmers rely on them heavily. If there aren’t enough workers to harvest the crops then they will rot in the fields.

But it seems that, in the wake of the Brexit vote, the pool of willing East Europeans has shrunk, and of course this has got the farmers worried. The Country Land and Business Owners Association (CLA) reports grave problems and they have urged the Government to introduce a new scheme to allow such East European workers to continue come to the UK after Brexit.

Some readers may remember a visa scheme called the Seasonal Agricultural Workers Scheme, which has now been abolished, but which enabled East Europeans to come to the UK for this purpose. The Government are being urged to create some kind of new scheme of this kind.
